Classroom Volunteers
During the first three weeks of school, parents are discouraged from participating in the classroom. In a Montessori environment, students work to devise classroom rules and governance, meet new friends, get to know their teachers and become accustomed to new ways of learning are the priority.
Further, teachers need a chance to establish boundaries and limits with students and get to know them on a one-on-one basis. Often a parent's presence is distracting to a student or the student behaves differently for the parent than for the teacher.
After the first three weeks of school, each teacher will notify parents about the process to participate in the classroom. The process will differ for each classroom due to the individual styles of teaching.
All parents and all other classroom visitors who volunteer in the classroom, even those who come in on a regular basis must sign in at the office. Teachers may wish to remind parents that it is for their own children's safety that they sign in, and that they will not be given credit for volunteer hours if they do not sign in.
*Classroom volunteers may not bring younger children into the classroom while helping unless they have been given specific permission by a teacher.
