What is Independent Study?
Short Term Independent Study (I.S.) is a program designed to provide students with school work when parents know in advance that they will be out of class for a certain number of days.  Dixon Montessori Charter School contracts may be for a minimum of 3 days, with a maximum of 10 days.  The maximum amount of days per year (cumulative) that students can be on independent study is 10 days. Students must have passing grades to participate in Independent Study.

In special circumstances and only upon prior written approval by the Executive Director, a student may be approved to participate in independent study for longer than the ten (10) cumulative school days permitted by the school's policy. Such requests will be granted on a case-by-case basis at the sole direction of the Executive Director, for reasons limited to, healthcare provider or county office of public health quarantine instructions, medical fragility, or extended illness. If a student is not approved for an extension of the ten (10) day cumulative maximum, further absences will be addressed in accordance with the Charter School’s attendance policy and may be considered unexcused and/or lead to truancy prevention measures, depending on the nature of the absence.

I.S. is a joint agreement between the Teacher, the Parent, the Student & the Director. The Parent & Student must meet with the Teacher a minimum of 1 day prior to the start of the contract to go over the assigned work.  I.S. contracts & work may not be sent home with the child unsigned by the parent.

All completed work assignments are due to the teacher on the date noted on the contract.

Contact the school office for more information about Independent Study.
